Engineering Surface Energy & Clay Stability: Scaling the CatChek® Framework to the Delaware Basin
Background
Following proven performance in the Eagle Ford and Anadarko Basin, SciDev expanded field-scale validation of the CatChek® Multifunctional Surfactant System (MSS) to the complex illite-rich formations of the Delaware Basin (Reeves County, Texas). The evaluation analyzed 1,573 regional wells along with controlled 1-to-1 well pairings to isolate true chemical uplift.
The Problem
- Complex Damage Pathways: High clay fractions (19.4% bulk mineralogy, dominated by non-expandable illite/mica) and pyrite content (5.2%) lead to pore-throat restrictions, fines migration, and severe water blocking in high-stress, low-permeability reservoirs.
- Commodity Limitations: Standard surfactants decay rapidly under high-temperature/high-pressure (HTHP) conditions, failing to prevent liquid-phase trapping and long-term proppant pack choking.
The Solution
SciDev deployed the patented CatChek® Multifunctional Surfactant System (MSS):
- Fines Anchoring: Highly charged cationic film-forming agents chemisorb to clay matrix edges, securing micro-fines and yielding a 68.9% Capillary Suction Time (CST) improvement.
- Pyrite Passivation: Forms a kinetic protective barrier on exposed pyrite, suppressing iron oxidation (Fe2+/Fe3+) and secondary scaling.
- Surface Energy Shift: Reduces interfacial tension (IFT) and optimizes fractional flow, achieving up to a 24% increase in oil flow in high-salinity laboratory core/sand pack testing.
- Regional Big-Data Scale (1,573 Wells): +44.4% sustained BOE/1,000 ft uplift at 12 months post-stimulation compared to untreated regional offsets.
- Formation-Specific 6-Month Uplifts: +49% in Wolfcamp A Lower, +35% in Wolfcamp A Upper, and +40% in Wolfcamp XY.
- Controlled Well-Pair EUR: Verified 28.6% EUR increase in side-by-side lateral offsets with identical completion parameters.
